Dallas has two airports and unlike Chicago or New York, the split is clean: American Airlines at DFW for everything, Southwest Airlines at Love Field for domestic routes. The decision is essentially a carrier decision. If Southwest flies your route from Love Field, compare it seriously. If you need international connections or a carrier other than Southwest for domestic, DFW is the answer.

Love Field (DAL) is 10 minutes from downtown Dallas by Uber — a $15–20 ride. DFW is 25–35 minutes from downtown, $35–45 by Uber, or the DART Orange Line for $3. The proximity advantage of Love Field is real for downtown Dallas travellers. For suburbs to the north (Plano, Frisco, Allen), DFW is equally close or closer.

Southwest's two free checked bags from Love Field are a tangible cost saving for most leisure travellers. A family of four checking bags saves $200–320 round-trip versus Spirit or Frontier at DFW. Even against American at DFW, where Basic Economy includes no bags, the Southwest total price is frequently competitive or lower despite a higher headline fare.

DFW to Medellín, Colombia (MDE) has become a growing route with Avianca and American offering connections. Return fares around $350–480. Medellín has undergone one of the most remarkable urban transformations in Latin America and is now a thriving destination for food, culture, and cost-conscious travellers. Stay in El Poblado for safety and convenience.

DFW to Panama City, Panama (PTY) is consistently underpriced. Copa Airlines flies this regularly. Return fares around $380–500. Panama City itself is excellent (canal, historic Casco Viejo, world-class seafood) and Panama as a connecting hub gives you access to South America at low add-on cost.

Morning departure, same-day return for weekend trips. If you're doing a long weekend from Dallas — Denver Friday to Monday, New York Thursday to Sunday — book the 6–7am outbound and the 8–9pm return. Those are the efficiency brackets where airlines are filling seats people don't want, and the fares reflect that. Midday and late afternoon flights on weekend trips carry a premium.
