Cheap Flights, No Destination: UK Winter 2026/27 Guide

Most people start with a destination and work backwards to the price. That's the expensive way to book flights. The people who consistently find the best deals do it the other way around — they start with a price they're happy to pay and let that determine where they go.

It sounds counterintuitive but it works. Airlines price routes based on how much demand there is for that specific destination. Barcelona in July is expensive because everyone wants to go to Barcelona in July. But if you're open to going anywhere warm in Europe, there will always be a route that's £40–60 cheaper — somewhere equally good that fewer people thought to search for.

This winter, the cheapest no-destination flights from UK airports are landing in Poland, Portugal, Morocco and Eastern Europe. Kraków from Stansted on Ryanair is often £30 to £45 one-way midweek. Porto is around £40 to £60. Marrakech from Stansted is regularly under £40, and Budapest from Luton on Wizz Air can drop to £30. None of these are compromises. They're cheap because fewer people search for them in November.

From Stansted: Ryanair runs the cheapest network in the country, and winter is when its prices are lowest. Kraków, Bratislava, Porto and Marrakech are often under £45 one-way on a Tuesday or Wednesday. If you live in the South East, check Stansted before Gatwick.

From Manchester: Jet2 and Ryanair both fly a big winter sun network. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are often £70 to £100 one-way with Jet2 outside the school holidays, bag included. For anyone in the North, that's better value than paying for a train to London first.

From Bristol: easyJet covers the basics well. Málaga, Faro and Tenerife are the regular winter bargains, often £50 to £80 one-way midweek in January.

From Edinburgh: Ryanair and easyJet fly direct to Kraków, Porto, Lanzarote and Alicante. Scottish travellers don't need to go via London for a cheap winter break, and the direct fare is usually cheaper once you count the train.

The cheapest flights in any month go to places that are good but slightly off most people's radar. In winter, these are the ones to look at.

Marrakech from Stansted on Ryanair, often under £40 one-way. Days are around 19°C and sunny in January, and Ryanair has added a new route from Birmingham this winter. Nights are cold, so pack a jumper. Go for the food, the souks and the sunshine, not the pool.

Kraków or Gdańsk from about £30 one-way. Poland in winter is cold, but it's cheap on the ground, beautiful in the snow, and the food is made for cold weather. Kraków's Christmas market runs until 1 January.

Sofia from Luton on Wizz Air, often £25 to £40. Bulgaria's capital is one of the cheapest city breaks in Europe, and Bansko, an hour or two away, is the budget ski option most people have never heard of.

The honest answer is that most mainstream flight search tools aren't built for this. Google Flights has a map view that helps. Skyscanner has a 'Everywhere' destination option. But both of these show you all options without prioritising by genuine deal quality — you end up scrolling through 50 routes trying to work out which one is actually cheap relative to normal.

The most effective approach: search by price bracket first. Decide what you're willing to pay — say £60 one-way — and then search every route from your nearest airport in that price window for your travel dates. What comes up is your list of genuine options.

The other thing that's worth knowing: Tuesday and Wednesday departures are consistently 15–25% cheaper than Friday or Saturday on every European route from every UK airport. If you're flexible on the day, fly midweek. A 'spontaneous' trip on a Thursday returning Monday costs significantly less than the classic Friday–Sunday city break. The experience is the same; the price is different.

Search from your airport now. January and early February, outside the half-term week, are the cheapest weeks of the whole year to fly from the UK. If you're flexible, that's when to go.
