Most people start with a destination and work backwards to the price. That's the expensive way to book flights. The people who consistently find the best deals do it the other way around — they start with a price they're happy to pay and let that determine where they go.

It sounds counterintuitive but it works. Airlines price routes based on how much demand there is for that specific destination. Barcelona in July is expensive because everyone wants to go to Barcelona in July. But if you're open to going anywhere warm in Europe, there will always be a route that's £40–60 cheaper — somewhere equally good that fewer people thought to search for.

Right now in April and May 2026, the cheapest no-destination flights from UK airports are landing in Portugal, Bulgaria, Albania, and parts of Spain and Greece that aren't Malaga or Crete. The cheapest flights in any given month go to the destinations that are genuinely good but slightly off the mainstream radar. In May 2026, those places include:

Albania (Tirana, TIA) from Luton or Stansted: Wizz Air fares around £40–65 one-way. Albania has Adriatic beaches that are indistinguishable from Croatia's, a capital city with unexpectedly good food and coffee culture, and almost no crowds because the tourism infrastructure is still three years behind the quality of the product. If you're the type of traveller who wants to say you were there before everyone else, Albania in 2026 is that place.

North Macedonia (Skopje, SKP): Around £50–70 one-way from London airports. Skopje is architecturally bizarre and fascinating — the government built a city centre full of neoclassical monuments in 2014 and the result is something you genuinely can't see anywhere else. Lake Ohrid is two hours away and one of Europe's most beautiful places.

Bulgaria (Varna or Burgas on the Black Sea coast): Ryanair from Stansted around £50–75 one-way for May. Bulgaria in May is 22–25°C, the Black Sea beaches are open, and the cost on the ground is roughly 50–60% of a comparable Greek beach destination. Sunny Beach is the Benidorm of Bulgaria — noisy and cheap. The stretches further up and down the coast are quieter and genuinely lovely.

The honest answer is that most mainstream flight search tools aren't built for this. Google Flights has a map view that helps. Skyscanner has a 'Everywhere' destination option. But both of these show you all options without prioritising by genuine deal quality — you end up scrolling through 50 routes trying to work out which one is actually cheap relative to normal.

The most effective approach: search by price bracket first. Decide what you're willing to pay — say £60 one-way — and then search every route from your nearest airport in that price window for your travel dates. What comes up is your list of genuine options.

The other thing that's worth knowing: Tuesday and Wednesday departures are consistently 15–25% cheaper than Friday or Saturday on every European route from every UK airport. If you're flexible on the day, fly midweek. A 'spontaneous' trip on a Thursday returning Monday costs significantly less than the classic Friday–Sunday city break. The experience is the same; the price is different.
